Sustainability at Icon Water
Icon Water provides an essential service to the Canberra community. Throughout this pandemic our front-line workers, our maintenance crews, the plant operators, and site inspectors have been out and about ensuring they continue to provide for the community. Our office based workforce are also working hard either from their desk or at home.
The timeline to return to pre-pandemic work arrangements remains unclear, but wherever we are working from, we continue to demonstrate sustainable practices whilst delivering our core essential services.
At Icon Water, we strive to incorporate the principles of sustainability across all aspects of our organisation. We recognise that we play an important role as custodians of our regions water supply, which is why we are committed to taking action to improve sustainability and embed sound environmental management.
We reduce impacts on our services through initiatives such as waste management, carbon and energy, sustainable development, conservation, land management, and education.
We work hard to minimise our impact on the environment. This is achieved through a wide range of initiatives. In particular, the Environment and Sustainability team help protect threatened species, ecological communities and natural environments through monitoring programs.
Icon Water manages the Murrumbidgee to Googong (M2G) offset, an area of approximately 110 hectares of high biodiversity habitat. This area includes a diverse range of species, including critically endangered ecological communities such as the Box-Gum Woodland.
Icon Water manages the landscape by maintaining vegetation cover, enhancing habitat connectivity, managing pest animals and weeds and encouraging populations of threatened and significant plant and animal species based on monitoring and adaptive management programs.
At Icon Water we recognise that we play a critical role in sustainability and the environment. Find out more about all of the ways that Icon Water is being sustainable here.

Emily - Recyling old water meters which will be melted down and reused. |
Sarah - My daily commute is now a walk down my hallway. I'm using about 1 less tank of fuel each month, just by working from home. |

Benjamin - Loving my commute to work after upgrading my 23 yo car to a Hybrid Electric Vehicle - 500km driving over 2 weeks with 1/2 tank still left! | James - James and the field crew work hard to make sure concrete is separated ready for recycling. |

Luke - Luke using reclaimed soil from burst water mains to backfill a subsided trench. | Zoe - We've just begun using a compost tumbler at home. I've been quite stunned by the reduction in our regular waste that goes into the bin now that we aren't throwing out the food scraps with it. |
