Icon Water announces Photo Comp prize winners
Icon Water have today announced the winners of their spring Photo Comp, who take out a combined prize pool of $5000.
The competition kicked off in September to coincide with the commencement of Floriade Reimagined. Budding photographers were asked to capture images of the beauty of Floriade in its new format throughout the city, or the value of water as a precious and finite resource.
With over 700 entries, the Icon Water competition team had the difficult job of shortlisting the top 30 entries which all fit into one of three themes:
- Water - our most precious resource
- Water- the environment and/or animals
- Floriade blooms in Canberra.
“We’ve been thrilled with not only the amount of entries we received, but the quality of entries” said Icon Water’s General Manager Customer Engagement Davina McCormick.
“There was a lot of diversity in the entries and it’s been really interesting to see the different interpretation of the competition themes and the creativity that each entrant brought to their photographs”.
The judging panel made up of experts in photography, water and events decided the overall winner of the major prize of $2000, followed by the winners of the over and under 18s categories, for a prize of $1000 each.
All 30 shortlisted entries were shared on Icon Water’s Instagram page where the community had the opportunity to vote for People’s Choice.
“We know it’s been a difficult year for many and we wanted to provide an opportunity to bring some fun and creativity to the community while also focussing on the value of water, and its role in creating and sustaining life here in the ACT. It’s really pleasing that so many members of the community took us up on this opportunity to share in our passion for all things water” said Ms McCormick.
The winners of Icon Water’s 2020 Photo Comp, winning a prize pool of over $5000 were:
Overall Winner |
‘Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve on a clear spring night’ by Matt Tomkins |
Over 18's Winner |
‘Early morning fog droplets’ by Paul Bainton |
Under 18's Winner |
'Controlling’ by Matt Kosec |
People's Choice Winner |
'Survival’ by Bunsong Sy |
Icon Water announced the winners on their website and Instagram page this morning and reached out to each individual winner to let them know of their success.
“We’d like to congratulate the winners and thank everyone that entered the competition. It was an incredibly tough decision for the judging panel with a high calibre of entrants” said Ms McCormick.
Overall prize winner Matt Tomkins, was thrilled to hear that his photo had been chosen as the judges’ favourite, investing many hours to get the winning shot.
“Wow! There were so many great entries, I’m stoked. I’m speechless” said Mr Tomkins.
“It was a very chilly and long night shooting, but I knew I would have to put in the time and effort to get the shot I was happy with, and thankfully the hard work has paid off.”
As a professional photographer, Matt’s business has seen a large decline in bookings due to COVID-19 and the win could not have come at a better time.
Icon Water has set up a Pop-Up gallery at Fyshwick Markets which will run through until the end of December to showcase the 30 shortlisted entries.
