Icon Water seeks applications from local community organisations needing support

Published date

Icon Water has announced that their Community Support Program will open today for applications from local organisations seeking support for the 2021/22 financial period.

Each year the program opens from the 1 March through to the 30 April, and applicants can apply for sponsorship from one of three categories:

  • Community Sectors
  • Community Inclusion
  • Affiliated Industry

Icon Water General Manager Davina McCormick said “Our Community Support Program really focusses on supporting local grassroots, community, not–for-profit and charitable organisations”.

“These organisations must be based in ACT or the surrounding region as we’re committed to supporting our community and we want to work with organisations that are also committed to providing essential services to, and improving the lives of, Canberrans”.

The program which has been running for over twenty years provides approximately $400,000 annually to applicants and has sponsored many vital support services such as Lifeline Canberra, Karinya House and Menslink. Icon Water also provides funding to community sporting clubs, educational and cultural initiatives and local community groups.

“This year we have created ten packages specifically for sporting clubs with each package providing $3,000 which clubs may use for uniforms or other essential needs along with a sports drink bottle pack for teams” said Ms McCormick.

“We understand that these last twelve months have been particularly difficult for many families impacted by the pandemic, and this support for community sporting clubs will assist in reducing the financial burden of uniforms and memberships that can prevent both children and adults from participating in team sports that provide physical activity and social inclusion”.

While there are no specific limits as to the amount of funding an organisation or group can request, Icon Water has specific assessment criteria that must be met.

“It’s really important that the organisations we support not only provide a benefit to the Canberra community, but they also must align with Icon Water’s values and must not negatively impact the environment or the community” said Ms McCormick.

Applications close on 30 April, after which Icon Water will assess the suitability of each to ensure they meet these requirements and will then determine which organisations they can support with funding to commence in July 2021.

“It’s always a tough decision as to who receives funding. Every year we receive a number of really great applications, and our aim is to support as many local organisations as we can with the funding we have available” said Ms McCormick.
