ACT 2021–2022 water and sewerage pricing

The Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission (ICRC) has set the 2021–22 water and sewerage prices for the Capital region. From 1 July 2021, water and sewerage prices will be adjusted to account for the Consumer Price Index (CPI), market factors, and government charges. 

For a typical household that uses 200 kilolitres of water per year, the 2021–22 pricing would mean a 2% increase to their combined water and sewerage bill, which roughly equals an additional 45 cents per week.

The 2021–22 price changes are consistent with the ICRC’s direction for the 2018–2023 period, which allowed for a gradual increase of the supply charge paired with a decrease of Tier 1 and 2 usage prices from 2017-2018 levels (see Table 1).

“We will continue to deliver our services in a sustainable and efficient way, supporting the ACT community and providing our customers with value for their money.” 

For example, throughout 2021–22, Icon Water expects to spend more than $22.1 million renewing the High Voltage Assets at Canberra’s primary sewage treatment plant. This project will ensure sewage continues to be treated and disinfected in a safe and reliable manner before it’s released back into the environment. We will also spend more than $17.0 million upgrading the capacity of the Belconnen Trunk Sewer main to enable the sewer network to service Canberra’s growing population.

^ Customers’ meter reads may occur at intervals slightly longer or shorter than a full calendar quarter.  Therefore, the Tier 1 price is applied to the first 0.548 kL supplied on average per day of the billing period, and the Tier 2 price is applied to water supplied in excess of 0.548 kL on average per day of the billing period.
