Hire a standpipe

Before hiring a standpipe, please carefully review our standpipe hire terms. Any breach of these terms may result in your hire arrangement being terminated.

What's the process for hiring and returning a standpipe? ]

First you need to submit our standpipe request form.

Once your request has been approved, we will contact you to confirm the standpipe is ready to collect.

You can then collect your standpipe from our office at 12 Hoskins Street, Mitchell (open 8:00am to 4:45pm, Monday to Friday).

When you no longer need your standpipe, it must be returned to our Mitchell office
We will take a final meter reading and your contract will be closed. You will receive your final account shortly after.

What sizes are available? ]

We have:

  • 32 mm, for general use.
  • 65 mm, can only be used to fill water tankers.

For a list of fees associated with relocating a water meter, visit our pricing page.

What do my responsibilities include? ]

While in possession of our standpipes, please bear in mind the following:

  • You must ensure the standpipe remains in good working condition.
This means it must be properly stored, cleaned and handled. If the standpipe is damaged or stolen you will be charged a fee as set out in schedule 1 of the standpipe hire terms.
  • You must operate your standpipe in accordance with current water restriction requirements.
  • Meter readings must be submitted by the beginning of each quarter of the financial year. You will be prompted with an email/SMS.
  • Standpipes and tankers must be presented for inspection as requested.
  • Accounts must be paid by the due date.

When conducting bulk extraction activities, what should I be conscious of? ]

Using one of our standpipes for bulk extraction activities may have adverse effects on Canberra's water network. Such as:

  • Scouring the water main, which may result in widespread water discolouration.
  • Localised pressure drops, which may impact households and businesses in the surrounding area.

To avoid these issues, we require contractors in possession of our high-output standpipes to avoid residential areas and cul-de-sacs.

This applies to all standpipes issued for filling tankers and/or with the following serial prefixes:

  • FTM
  • SPL32
  • SP65
