Road closures and disruption to service due to burst water main
Icon Water are working to have roads reopened and water restored in North Canberra following a burst water main on Wakefield Avenue. The following road closures are currently in place:
- Wakefield Avenue between Northbourne Avenue and Dooring Street (heading eastbound)
Repairs to the burst main are underway and are expected to take several hours due to the size and location of the main. Repairs to the road will also be required, and those repairs will take additional time. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.
We expect an interruption to supply for approximately six hours. It’s also likely that the burst main and subsequent changes in water flow may lead to temporary discoloured water throughout North Canberra. This is due to natural sediment in the pipes being stirred and this should clear with normal use within 24 hours of the works being completed.
We don’t recommend that you drink water that appears, tastes or smells objectionable. It’s also better not to use household appliances, such as your dishwasher or washing machine, due to possible staining or discolouration of clothes. However, if your water appears clear you can continue on with your normal water use.
Further updates will be available on our twitter feed and the homepage of our website www.iconwater.com.au.
Icon Water would like to apologise to customers in the area who are currently without water, and to members of the community whose commute home this afternoon may take longer than planned.
We are unable to predict faults such as burst water mains. When a fault like this occurs we make it our priority to restore services as quickly as possible. In instances where there is an interruption relating to a fault we will provide updates on our twitter feed which are also available on our website.
