Water Treatment
Almost all untreated water contains small particles of soil, dust, pollen and other matter. Even water that looks clear may have tiny particles in it.
Attached to these particles are bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms that can be harmful to humans and our pets and farm animals. While nature has its own processes for filtering and cleaning water, this takes time and requires pollution-free and ecologically balanced environments. It also does not guarantee the same level of quality every time.
To remove the risk of organisms in water, we process water at a water treatment plant before it is distributed to our customers, ensuring consistent, high quality water. We provide over 100 million litres of treated water each day to Canberra and Queanbeyan residents (via Queanbeyan City Council).
Most of the water required to meet Canberra and Queanbeyans’ needs is drawn from the Bendora Dam with water from Googong Dam being drawn during times of high demand during summer or extensive dry periods. In periods of low water supply, additional water can be drawn from the Murrumbidgee River.
Water from the Cotter River and Murrumbidgee River catchments is treated at Mount Stromlo water treatment plant, while water from Googong dam is treated at the Googong water treatment plant
