Demolition
When structures are demolished, there are some risks for Icon Water – like damage to our assets, or even the possibility of theft of your meter or of Canberra’s water, if your property is left empty.
That’s why you need to have a building application approved by Icon Water before any demolition begins (even if you’re planning to demolish a building and not re-build).
This information should be read together with the following pages:
Step 1: Pre-demolition asset inspection
Take photos of any above-ground Icon Water assets (water meters, water meter boxes, sewer manholes etc) before anything is demolished.
This will protect you if there was damage to our assets beforehand, that could be attributed to your demolition works. If you don’t have evidence that the damage was pre-existing, you may need to pay to repair the damage.
Step 2: Disconnect your water and sewer connections
If you plan to demolish your house/building and not construct a new one within 12 months, you must have your water meter/connection and sewer connections disconnected by us at your expense. This means we will remove your water meter and cap your sewer connection.
We do this to prevent theft of our meter, unlawful water use, and contaminants (like soil) entering our sewer network. You will still be liable for any service fees during this time. Please contact us to discuss further.
Step 3: Drawings
As part of your application you need to engage a professional to develop a demolition plan and draft demolition drawings. The demolition drawings must show temporary fencing and flagging around each surface fitting (water, meters, hydrants, sewer manholes etc).
Step 4: Prepare and submit an Icon Water building application
Prepare and submit an Icon Water building application
Once you have decided on the details of your proposed construction we recommend engaging a professional to develop a design and engineering drawings and submit them to us with an application for approval.
See What makes a good building plan (you can also submit your application from this page) for more information.
Step 5: Reconnect your water or sewer supply
Once you have finished building your new house or building, engage a licensed plumber to reconnect your water and sewer to our mains. The licensed plumber will contact us to arrange a new meter to be installed.
If you want to use the water supply during construction, your licensed plumber must contact us to arrange for an approval for a temporary connection. This connection must be protected with temporary fencing or flagging, and the meter must remain accessible for our water meter readers at all times.
Following these steps will help your project run smoothly.
